The framed picture measures 23Ó x 27Ó with a 17 1/2Ó x 22Ó view. The portrait depicts a youthful Naval Ensign in peaked cap and Army style ÒworkÓ tunic with gold buttons and stand collar. Gold aviatorÕs wings are present above his breast pocket. The use of shoulder boards on the tunic dates the picture as pre-1925 when cuff stripes became regulation. The painting is signed at the bottom ÒB.M. KeyesÓ. The painting is housed in its original frame which still has its John Wanamaker makerÕs label as well as a 1996 dated label from Frederic Gallery in Littleton, MA showing that the painting was cleaned, varnished and relined. The painting itself is in very good condition, intact with light crackling to the paint. Bernard Keyes (1898-1973) was a native New Englander and graduated from both the prestigious Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and HarvardÕs Fogg Museum School. Keyes is best known for his portraits and seascapes. This is a nice example of his work and rates very good condition. (245-69)
